The AR program is implemented as part of the 5th & 6th curriculum, and it is highly encouraged at the 7th & 8th grade levels. The program has proven to be highly successful at motivating students to read more. Please see the brief description of the program below. You are encouraged to visit the Renaissance website to learn more about their philosophy and credentials. To learn more about how NMS uses the program please contact Kacy Zaleski in the library or your child's reading teacher.
Accelerated Reader (AR), a computerized curriculum management system, and Reading Renaissance, a program of teacher practices employing student formative diagnostic assessment data from AR and other software, have been proven, by scientifically based research, to be effective in helping educators dramatically accelerate student reading growth. AR and Reading Renaissance provide teachers with a solid basis of formative information feedback to improve their reading instruction, and comprise principles and practices endorsed by the National Reading Panel, other national reading studies, and the No Child Left Behind Act's Reading First Initiative. AR and Reading Renaissance support all reading textbooks, programs, and curricula. Numerous reports by independent researchers demonstrate that students' reading abilities improve with use of AR and Reading Renaissance, and that the performance gap between high-achievement and low-achievement populations is substantially reduced.
