Most college athletic programs are regulated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), an organization that has established rules on eligibility, recruiting, and financial aid. The NCAA has three membership divisions- Division I, Division II, and Division III.
If you are planning to enroll in college as freshmen and you wish to participate in Division I or Division II athletics, you must be certified by the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse was established as a seperate organization by the NCAA member institutions to ensure consistent interpretation of NCAA initial- eligibility requirements for all prospective student athletes at all member institutions.
If you want to participate in Division I or Division II sports in college, you should start the cerfification process when you are a junior in high school. Check with your counselor to make sure you are taking a core curriculum that meets NCAA requirements. Also, register to take the ACT or SAT as a junior. Submit your Student Release Form (available in your guidance counseling office) to the Clearinghouse by the beginning of your senior year.
Eligibility Requirements for Division I NCAA Member Institutions
Currently, in order to be eligible for practice, participation in regular season competition, and athletically related financial aid during the freshman year of college, a student must meet the following criteria:
- Graduate from High School
- Maintain a minimum 2.5 grade point average in a core curriculum of at least thirteen academic courses.
- SAT -Minimum combined score of 820(verbal and math)
- ACT -Minimum combined score of 68(sum of the four scores)
- If you do not meet the 2.50 GPA requirement, you must compensate by making higher standardized test scores.
