Eligibility Requirements for Divisions I,II,and III NCAA Member Institutions

Eligibility Requirements for Division II NCAA Member Institutions
Initial Eligibility of Freshman Athletes for Division I and II Member Institutions
Students who plan to participate in NCAA division I or II college sports must complete the following steps.

Three Types of Eligibility are Possible
  1. Certification of eligibility for expense-paid campus visit.
  2. Preliminary certification of eligibility to participate in college sports(appears likely to meet all NCAA requirements but not yet graduated).
  3. Final certification granted when proof of graduation is received.

Eligibility Requirements for Division III NCAA Member Institutions

Division III NCAA member institutions, as well as nonmember institutions, are not under the abovementioned eligibility requirements. In order to be eligible for practice, participation in regular season competition, and need-based or merit-based financial aid, an entering freshman must satisfy the following:the eligibility rules and requirements of the institutor. The eligibility rules of the athletic conference in which the institution holds membership.

National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Regulations

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has different eligibility requirements for student athletes. To be eligible to participate in intercollegiate athletics as an incoming freshman, two of the following three requirements must be met:


Student-athletes must also have on a file at the college an official ACT or SAT score report from the appropriate national testing center. Results reported on the student's high school transcript are not acceptable.
