PEIMS
The PEIMS(Public Education Information Management System) data collection process enters its fourteenth year in 2001-2002. There are four submissions. All Texas scool districts are required to furnish information to the Texas Education Agency via PEIMS data collection procedures in the following ares:
*District/Campus/Shared Services Arrangements
*Finacial
*Staff
*Student
The rules, requirements, and record layouts for the 2001-2002 PEIMS data submission are contained in the Texas Education Agency document entitled 2001-2002 PUBLIC EDUCATION INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM DATA STANDARDS. All district superintendants have been mailed copies of this publication. The Data Standards provides the answers for PEIMS questions. TEA will not change the rules without an update to the text.
More overall uses are being made of the data than ever before. TAAS staffers are using the data to do desk audits; districts outside acceptable ranges are identified for on-site visits. Mandated program expenditure levels are monitored and noncompliance letters issued. Reserch groups are using it to put out a myriad of reports comparing districts on class size, per pupil spending, number of staff, salaries, etc. The Legislature is using the data to compare district administrative cost, fund balance, student performances, etc. The data is used for ditrict accountability reporting and the Academic Excellence Indicator System.
Districts should attach significant importance to ditrict information systems. Processes must be in place that moniter data accuracy throughout the school year, not just at PEIMS data collection times. Review of data in the district information management system throughout the year by all who have a vested interest in the information can significantly improve data accuracy and eliminate the need for resubmission. Only one resubmission of PEIMS data is permitted per submission.
This condensed version of the PEIMS DATA STANDARDS information has been developed at the Education Service Center, Region XIII to give districts a concise, quick refrence to help in the collection and submission of the required data. IT IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE DATA STANDARDS.
