A Message from the Social Studies Department
From World Geography to World History, from U.S. History to Government/Economics, and from Psychology to Sociology, Social Studies classes are very relevant to the lives of students today. During the course of the year, each student will continue to be asked to reflect on topics and connect issues to his personal viewpoint and to the modern world. Our hope is that parents, family, and community will become more involved in this process. Class activities will include simulations, maps, writing assignments, projects, interviews, guest speakers, and internet involvement.
A student should plan on spending at least twenty minutes each night on homework. A great deal of material is covered in class. The textbooks for the classes provide students with a basic foundation of material covered. The textbook is used as one of many resources and as a means for students to develop much needed study skills.
Today in education, there has been a needed return to an emphasis on writing skills. Students are asked to write essays with clear thesis statements which are supported with strong arguments and detailed evidence. Supporting one's opinions with arguments and evidence is a life skill that is applied to a variety of class activities and exercises, from maps and charts to simulations and trials.
Our hope is that each student is challenged to achieve and encouraged to investigate. The Social Studies department wants each student to be successful, and hopes that we can work together to create an environment for that success. We value your suggestions. If you ever have any questions or comments, please set up an appointment to visit with the teacher. We are here for our students.
